SWIFT, BY NAOMI HART. an anniversary sculpture
Have you seen the beautiful swift birds flying high above Princesshay? Take a look UP in Princesshay Square and you’ll see flocks of swifts made from recycled plastic bottles in flight as part of a jaw dropping sculpture commissioned by The Crown Estate to celebrate Princesshay’s 10th birthday.
The swifts after joined together by copper wire, salvaged from old electrical cables, giving the illusion of birds in flight.
The piece aims to demonstrate how the built environment can help nature to thrive as well as coexist.
Swifts, who spend nearly their whole lives flying and even sleep in the air, use buildings to nest in, so everyone can help make space for them and give them a home. The long distance migrants have shared our buildings for over 2,000 years but are now in trouble. The UK lost 39 % of its swifts between 1995 and 2011.
The RSPB have teamed up with Princesshay on this project to help put the spotlight on these birds and raise awareness.
SWIFT FAMILY FUN DAY
On Saturday 9th September, we are hosting a family fun day to celebrate the Princesshay Swift Project. The event runs from 11am – 3pm in Princesshay Square and will have an environmental theme, with stands from RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust and Double Print Elephant Workshop, all of whom will be running a range of interactive family activities. These include making a bug hotel, a swift mobile and community banner. Limited edition anniversary bags for life will be handed out throughout the event to visitors of Princesshay.
Exeter College dance students will be performing a swift inspired piece at 11.30am.
DID SOMEONE SAY CAKE?
The actual anniversary of the official launch of Princesshay is Wednesday 20th September.
On this date at 11.30am, we will have a giant cake in Princesshay with enough to feed 800! It’s the biggest cake ‘Crafty Cakes’ in St Thomas have ever made! First come first served.
Our birthday promo team will also be handing our a few surprises on the day too 🙂
STYLE IN EXETER
We’re thrilled to be hosting this year’s Style in Exeter event on Saturday 23rd September, teaming up with the In Exeter team. The event will run from 10am – 4pm throughout Princesshay and shoppers can expect fashion shows, live music, a photo booth, face painting, beauty lounge, balloons and more!
It’s definitely a day NOT to be missed. We’ll see you there!
